The food habits and dietary patterns of American consumers are changing and they are increasingly demanding food products that possess certain attributes relating to how the food was produced or processed. The objectives of the study are to analyze household purchase of fresh tomatoes and to determine the magnitudes of the price premium paid for the organic tomatoes by estimating a hedonic price model. The study uses the 2003 ACNielsen Homescan panel data. The data set represents a nationally representative panel of U.S. households, which provide food purchase data for at-home consumption. For empirical implementation, parameters of the hedonic model were estimated using the Box-Cox transformation procedure. The results indicated that consumers value the... |

The paper extends the household hedonic model, as a non-market valuation tool, by estimating a supply function for variety attributes of a subsistence crop in a developing country. The model is applied to bananas in Uganda, making use of disaggregated data on variety-specific farm-gate banana bunch prices and attributes. The hedonic analysis is applied at the farm-gate, the first link in the market chain, while accounting for the semi-subsistence nature of banana producing households. Within the framework of the agricultural household, where consumption and production decisions are non-separable, prices reflect the implicit marginal valuation of both consumption and production attributes jointly. The paper is motivated by the need to quantify the value of... |

This article presents an analysis of the insertion into the process of agroindustrialization of LAR Agroindustrial Cooperative from the municipality of Medianeira (State of Paraná) and its effect on the collection of ICMS (Tax on Transfer of Goods and on Transport Services Interstate, Intercity, and on Communication) in the cities where the cooperative has manufacturing plants for the period ranging from 2000 to 2004. The methodology used was documentary research and case study. The results of the research reveal that LAR Agroindustrial Cooperative has positively contributed to ICMS collection in the municipalities of Medianeira, Itaipulândia, Missal, Matelândia, Céu Azul, and Santa Helena. |

A large waterborne outbreak of infection that occurred during August 2000 in a local community in France was investigated initially via a rapid survey of visits to local physicians. A retrospective cohort study was then conducted on a random cluster sample of residents. Of 709 residents interviewed, 202 (28.5%) were definite cases (at least three liquid stools/day or vomiting) and 62 (8.7%) were probable cases (less than three liquid stools/day or abdominal pain). Those who had drunk tap water had a three-fold increased risk for illness (95% CI 2.4-4.0). The risk increased with the amount of water consumed (chi-square trend: p < 0.0001). Bacteriological analyses of stools were performed for 35 patients and virological analyses for 24 patients.... |

In Uganda overall crop loss due to pests exceeds that caused by drought, soil infertility, or poor planting material. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) technologies can reduce pest damage to crops by emphasizing non-chemical control methods thereby reducing potential negative effects of chemicals on the environment while preserving profitability. This study investigates the adoption of eight IPM practices including intercropping, crop rotation, two improved varieties, incorporating an 'exotic weed chaser', optimal planting dates, optimal planting density and fertilizer use. Variables include market forces, social factors, management factors, and technology delivery mechanisms. Results were consistent across the multivariate logit and ordered logit... |

Two major memory systems have been recognized over the years (Squire 1987): the declarative memory system, which is under the control of the hippocampus and related temporal lobe structures, and the procedural or habit memory system, which is under the control of the striatum and its connections. Most if not all learning tasks studied in animals, however, involve either the performance or the suppression of movement; this, if learned well, may be viewed as having become a habit. It is agreed that memory rules change from their first association to those that take place when the task is mastered. Does this change of rules involve a switch from one memory system to another? Here we will comment on: 1) reversal learning in the Morris water maze (MWM), in... |

The matrices of food price elasticities and flexibilities derived from a complete food demand system approach are theoretical consistent and reciprocal with each other. The statistical estimates, however, show that by using the inverted elasticities to represent flexibilities or vice versa, cause sizable measurement errors. For agricultural policy and program analyses, directly estimated food price elasticities and flexibilities should be used. |

This research determines the profitability for farmers of marketing film-wrapped Crown-Cut broccoli in Southwest Virginia. Historical price data was collected in three eastern terminal markets (Atlanta, Baltimore, and Philadelphia) for Crown-Cut and bunched broccoli from October 1998 to January 2005. Cost-of-production budgets were estimated for Crown-Cut broccoli. The economic data was entered into a market window analysis and the profitability of each market was evaluated. The profitability of Crown-Cut broccoli was illustrated by market-window graphics. Market windows were generated using an analysis platform developed by Kalo (1998). The profitability estimates were calculated by posting historical market prices by week in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet... |
